Here it is! Because I demanded it! My very own sports blog!! Woohoo, aren't I special. as in Forest Gump special, not Michael Jordan special. Having been a sports fan and actually spent time around professional athletes, I figured why not, especially since I certainly have some strong opinions when it comes to anything sports.
First of all, did anyone actually think anyone except Canada was going to win the gold medal in hockey this year? As far as I know there are only a handful of things to do there -- drink beer, play hockey, hunt moose, and go to strip clubs. In Russia you can at least make fun of people in Kiev for forming their own country 20 years ago and now deciding maybe that was a bad idea. I'm hardly surprised by that either since every time I have a pet that dies St Petersburg, Stalingrad, Leningrad has a a new name.
I will admit that I a a supporter of the Cowboys and the Red Sox, but I will do my best to be equally critical of all major sports franchises, not just the ones I root for. That being said if I seem to give more attention to them than others, I apologize in advance. On second thought, no I don't. I like who I like and I think strong opinions make for entertaining reading and it's my name on the blog, and no one is paying me to do this.
I read this week that Kobe-- by the way if you don't know, I can't stand him, and yes I've actually met him-- is upset because the Lakers are dumping salary and traded Steve Blake to the Golden State Warriors. Well Kobe, maybe you should have thought about what the repercussions might be for signing a 2 year 48 millions dollar contract before playing in a single game this season. By the way, year to date you have played in 6 games this year, which for the record is only 6 more games than I have played in. I have 5'10, slightly out of shape, and I'm white. My basketball abilities would best be described in a documentary called "White Men Can't Jump, Dribble, Shoot, or Pass," but I doubt the Lakers' record would be any worse if I were the starting 2 guard this season. Anyway, congrats to Steve Blake to getting out of town and getting to a team that's actually going to be relevant for the next 5 years. Laker fans, if you haven't figured it out, this is about to be the darkest era in your history. Jim Buss couldn't run a stop sign, let alone a basketball team. It hasn't even been a year since Jerry passed away, so I have to say I am impressed with how quickly he's ruined the team his dad took such great care of. Love them or hate them, the Lakers are the most successful franchise in sports over the past 25 years. Well, until this season. And next season. And probably the one after that, etc.
Is anyone besides me that the Olympics is over? Maybe I'm just jaded and old, but I don't think the Olympics is as special as it used to be. Maybe it's because they finally allow pro athletes to play. I wonder how the Thorpe family feels about that by the way. But I think it's because of the staggering of the winter games and summer games every two years instead of every 4 years. Anyone know the reasoning behind that? It's because the IOC felt like the winter games got over shadowed too much by the summer games to wanted to give the winter games it's own slot. I have a great idea to make sure the winter games get more attention. Get rid of curling. Sorry ladies, but I happen to think if a woman who is 8 months pregnant can medal in an event, it's not a sport. It happened. Look it up. Second- Find a poster boy that Americans can get behind that doesn't come across like whiney crybaby like Shaun White did this year. I'm not trying to take away from his lifetime accomplishments, but seriously name another American snowboarder. Unless you are one, or are related to one, I bet you can't. Another idea I have to make the winter games more enjoyable is that we have whoever medals in women's figure skating has to play the gold medal winning hockey team in an exhibition match. THAT would get ratings.
I think I've gone on long enough for today.. I think next time I'll preview the upcoming baseball season and let you know how I think every team will finish, or maybe I'll just talk about how much I hate that the Cowboys are doomed to mediocrity for as long Jerry Jones owns the team. Who know.
